Who We Are
Relate and Communicate was created to make communication feel less overwhelming—and a lot more manageable.
Growing up, we developed our communication skills by watching the people around us muddle through awkward conversations like money, work, relationships, beliefs, and values. Many of us may have seen someone in our family raise their voice to be heard or shut down completely when things got uncomfortable. This left us to learn by trial and error and improvising our way through awkward coffee dates and idle chit-chat. We weren’t given a manual; we’ve just been kind of... winging it.
Unfortunately, winging it usually leads to those "Ugh, I didn't mean to say that" or “Oof, I sounded so goofy when I said that” moments, leaving many of us with the thought "I’m never talking to anyone again", because we feel like we are from some other planet.
Relate and Communicate was created to bridge that gap. Effective communication is key to healthy relationships. At relate and communicate, we are here to make "We need to talk!" feel less like an “uh-oh” moment and more like an “a-ha” moment.
Through workshops, groups, and one-on-one coaching, we offer tools you can use right away—in all your relationships. We are here to help you communicate with more confidence, connect more effectively with yourself and others, and build healthier, more meaningful relationships.
How we help:
We don’t just talk about communication skills and send you on your way. We roll up our sleeves and practice them with you using real-life situations, relatable scenarios, and hands-on exercises that actually fit your life. Our goal is to help you build communication tools you can confidently:
Say what you mean without the "um, huh, wait, what?" factor.
Listen like a pro (the kind where people actually feel heard).
Stay cool when a conversation starts to feel like a pressure cooker.
The Science-y Bit
Our approach is rooted in DBT, CBT, and ACT — but don’t worry, this isn’t a dry therapy lecture or a boring podcast you’ll never finish. We take these evidence-based tools and bring them to life through relatable conversations, interactive exercises, and real-world practice that actually makes sense in everyday life.
The goal isn’t “perfect” communication — because honestly, does that even exist? We’re simply here to help you build better tools, stronger connections, and the confidence to use your skills when the moments really matter.
About the Founder
Relate and Communicate was founded by Angelia (“Angie”) Scates, a Master Certified Professional Coach with a master’s degree in general psychology and advanced training in DBT, CBT, and ACT. She brings extensive experience facilitating psychoeducational groups and advising individuals across multiple levels of care, including people navigating mental health challenges, substance use recovery, emotional regulation, and relationship issues.
After years of helping people improve communication, deepen self-awareness, and strengthen relationships, Angie noticed a consistent gap: most of us were never taught practical, everyday skills for relating and talking with others. Relate and Communicate was created to meet that need through engaging, approachable, skills-based coaching.
For many of us, we may have tried to learn better communication and relationship skills through podcasts, therapy, or self-help books, but found the information to feel dry, overly clinical, difficult to understand, and hard to apply in everyday life. Angie created a different approach—one that makes effective communication and active listening skills clear, engaging, and practical so people of all ages can confidently use them in their daily personal and professional relationships.
